ILSHRM12 in the Books
It is late, I have been out of town for what seems like two weeks, my wife is out of town, suffice it to say I am all out of sorts. But I need to create this post at the end of my journey home. On Tuesday as the conference wound down I spent some time tweeting to all of the presenters, bloggers and guests that we had in attendance thanking them for their efforts. We greatly appreciate each and everyone of them. If I did not message you, it was an oversight, we were grateful to have all of the folks who helped us pull off a two and one half day conference which was nearly flawless.
Thanks to all of the folks who helped us create this, and to those nearly 700 folks who attended,
But now, I would like to publicly thank ALLof the ILSHRM BOARD MEMBERS. This is the group of people who made this conference happen and made it a success. While some folks shoulder more of a load than others, it was a group effort that made this work so well. I am proud to be part my local chapter: CICSHRM, SHRM- National as well as a board member of board of Illinois SHRM.
There is no one who was paid a dime to do any of the work that they did. We are a volunteer organization, and a damn fine one at that.
So from the Social Media guy THANKS TO MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS - a job well done. Be proud of what we have accomplished. - because soon the work will begin for 2013.

Engagement or Enslavement
Yesterday prior to the first pre-conference session I was part of a conversation about Employee Engagement. It is hard to attend any event about HR these days that does not have at least one session that discusses this subject. ILSHRM is no different. The conversation I was part of, involved Paul Hebert and John Sumser.
John was staking out a position that made employee engagement seem almost criminal. His theory is this. To take from the fully-engaged employee, what we as the employer are not paying for, is like taking their soul. We are taking more than we are paying for as the employer and should not be entitled to it. He likened it to slavery.
Hmm.. I am no sure I agree with the theory, but certainly is food for thought. We will see what today brings regarding employee engagement. More to come...

Hockey, Human Resources and Illinois SHRM
I am very passionate about things that I enjoy, Two of my passions are Human Resources and Hockey, This is an eclectic combination, I understand, but this is who I am. Recognizing that I am passionate about these things, I sometimes contemplate, how do I get better at these things?
Work at them, I must work at them, I resolve. I work to get better. That, I believe is what drives most, people to attend conferences. In looking to express this thought, I turn to a quote from a retired National Hockey League veteran Paul Coffey.
This year we will be offering up presentations from some of the folks who are at the forefront of our field. We have four keynote sessions this year
I personally have seen Simon, Joe & Jason as well as Cy present and they were fabulous. Libby's reputation is equal to that of the three that I have seen. All four of these folks can help get you to the top, with their inspirational presentations and writings.
Once you get past the keynote sessions there are 30 other sessions available. Sadly, you will only be able to see five sessions in their entirety, as we have six different presenters in each of the five slots. I reviewed this matrix 30 speakers. I can personally vouch for 18 of the 30. The 18 that I have seen are all great, not good, but great presenters. So all of these folks will hep you to stay on top of your game as well.
Now that is what I would call the ,meat and potatoes of the conference, now if I may I am going to share some of the "bling", the shiny objects that sometime draws other folks in for an event.
We kick off with a bonus pre-conference session, from the TalentNet folks. Craig Fisher (aka Fishdogs) will be bringing their brand of social engagement, tips and tricks and general overall knowledge for those of us in the HR/Recruiting world to ILSHRM on Sunday You won't want to miss this.
We are doing something similar to what was done at SHRM National (in the hive). Geoff Webb and Jeff Waldman will be working with folks who have questions about social media, it use and integration into HR. You can hear what they have planned right here. And speaking of SHRM, you will also get a chance to meet Curtis Midkiff, SHRM's Director of Social Engagement. Curtis will be presenting a session on Monday called Making Sense of Socail Media as a HR Tool.
We will have a hall full of vendors 50+ displaying their wears, showing off the latest and greatest in the HR biz. Be sure to cruise through the hall and see what they have to offer.
Illinois SHRM has assembled a list of social media notables who will be in attendance. They will be tweeting, facebooking, google + ing and blogging about the event from all different angles.
You can meet these folks, talk to them, ask them question and hang with them as we say IRL (in real life). You can also see thier profile here on the blog site.
In addition to this, Kevin Grossman and Meghan Biro are bringing their Twitter Chat called #TChat to Illinois SHRM with a SPECIAL LIVE EVENT with STREAMING LIVE VIDEO thanks to our friends at JSTN. This will take place Monday evening at 5 pm. You can watch, listen, tweet or just lurk. You will see how one of these chats really comes together. And I believe there will be another big announcement coming from #TChat folks while at Illinois SHRM - stay tuned for that.
There is a ton of stuff going on this year. To help keep track of it all, our Susan Avello has put together an app to help you. You can download this app right here.
So come join us, all of us at Illinois SHRM who have been working really hard for last several months to put on a great conference that is innovative, lively, fun, exciting, affordable and enlightening. Hope to see you at the Drury Lane. [Click here to register]

"Nobody's a natural. You work hard to get good and then work to get better. It's hard to stay on top."So if you subscribe to Mr. Coffey's philosophy, this should be a great reason enough to attend Illinois SHRM in 2012. While I understand there are a myriad of reasons folks may attend, we all want to be on our "A" game, all day -every day. To do this you must know what is happening out in the larger world of business and Human Resources.

IL SHRM Annual Conference Partners with Meet Meme
As in years past, this year's annual conference held on August 6-7,
will offer an amazing opportunity for HR professionals from around the state to
connect and network with others from around the state.
"While the great speaker lineup and learning opportunities may be
the thing that originally draw attendees to the IL SHRM conference,
relationships built with fellow attendees is what brings them back again and
again" says Sabrina Baker, the conferences Assistant Director.
In 2012, IL SHRM Conference planners have taken an additional step to
encourage attendees to network with fellow attendees, speakers and vendors by
partnering with Meet Meme. Meet Meme
offers a different approach to the traditional business cards often handed out
at conferences. Meet Meme cards are
trading cards and allow each person to infuse a little bit of their personality
into what they are handing out to others.
From Meet Meme's website:
| Here are a couple card from events gone by. |
Each attendee to this
year's conference will have the opportunity to sign up and receive, free of
charge, 50 trading cards. In addition,
we will be utilizing the cards to incorporate a scavenger-hunt like game with
each of our sponsors and vendors. The
prize for winning the scavenger hunt is sure to excite the crowd and will be
revealed at a later date!
IL SHRM is very excited to
be partnering with Meet Meme and the networking opportunity they provide. Details for attendees to register for their
cards will be coming soon. In the
meantime, we are looking for companies who want to promote their company on
each and every card. We want two
separate sponsors to help us provide the cards to attendees and in turn, their
company logo will be on each and every card.
That's 50 cards, per attendee.
Last year we had 852 attendees, the math really speaks for itself.
You can view a sample of
the cards on the Meet Meme website at www.meet-meme.com. If you are
interested in sponsoring the cards or participating in our conference in any
other way please contact Sabrina at sbakerphr@gmail.com.

Illinois SHRM State Conference
Last week our friends in Louisiana held their state conference. Judging from the tweet stream it looked like an awesome event. Of course, the BIG SHOW - SHRM National is coming up in Atlanta June 24 - 27.
Well here in the Land of Lincoln a group of about 40 people having been working real hard to put together a fantastic SHRM state conference. No doubt, we here at the ILSHRM blog site are completely biased and have zero objectivity, so let me just throw down some things that we have planned for August 5 through August 8th extravaganza.

The conference is a full two-day event with a pre-conference session on Sunday.
Details...
On Sunday August 5 we kick it off with A TNL Recruiting Conference. This will be lead by Criag Fisher a.k.a. fishdogs who will also be bringing along Crystal Miller (TheOneCrystal) to help him out at this session, and probably a couple more folks from his posse.
Then on Monday we are going to go full tilt. We are proud to have our own home town boy Charlie Judy (HRFishbowl) as the emcee for the event. Over the course of the two days we will have four keynote/general session presentations from ...

For our break out sessions there are five sessions each day, with six choices for each time slot. Check out this schedule.
We have also put together a Social Media Team, these are folks, who will be at the event and helping us support the event via numerous social media channels.
- Mike Vandervort The Human Race Horses
- Matt Stollack True Faith HR
- Chris Fields The Cost of Work
- Victorio Milian The Victorio Milan Blog
- Buzz Rooney The Buzz On HR
- Kevin Grossman The HR Marketer
- Meghan Biro Talent Culture
We have the principals from #TChat (Kevin and Meghan) with us for the conference; and on Monday evening after our sessions are over we are planning a Live #TChat event on-site at the Drury Lane Theater, and then transitioning into our Monday evening tweet-up.
Illinois SHRM has also partnered with Job Search Television Network JSTN. With their help we will attempt to stream the TChat with LIVE Video on the internet.
These are people we have not yet mentioned who will be presenting breakout sessions, and will no doubt contribute more than just their presentations.
William Tincup (100K+ followers on twitter)
Also, we will have Geoff Webb and Jeff Waldman in attendance sharing their expertise with our attendees. The two will be helping interested attendees to develop their social media understanding. You can see more about the two in Susan Avello's interview.
We are building some additional resources for the conference as we speak. We have a You Tube Channel for the conference. We have made a twitter list of attendees (please let us know if you would like to be included).
You can also visit our Facebook Page and don't forget to sign up as an attendee at our Linkedin Event.
In addition to the aforementioned folks, this next group is what I will call "unconfirmed rumor of attendance."
Understand that this is still a work in progress, and we have a few surprises we have not even touched on yet. So here is the hook - if you haven't signed up yet - click here !
Hope to see you in Oak Brook in August!

Second Year ILSHRM Director’s Goals Update
The fact that my first year as director my "goals"
blog post was published 1/7/11
and I am just sitting down to write my second year update on 1/26/12 (finalized
on 1/31/12) should tell you something.
Either I am extremely disorganized or we have been very busy here at the
Illinois State Council of SHRM (aka @ILSHRM). Personally, I prefer the latter even though
at times I do feel the first reason can and has been true at times.
It has been an awesome year and I am so humbled by the wealth of talent on our board of directors as well as the enthusiasm and hard work they have put forth to make tremendous headway towards our goals. And by golly they even met and exceeded some of them. The following is a copy of the 1/7/11 goals list with noted updates (in bold) as well as additions for 2012 which take me through the end of my tenure as Director turning over the reins to Cathy Plouzek, PHR for 2013 & 2014.
…
I’d like to share a few goals that I would like our state council to achieve during my two year tenure as Director. I have to admit these goals are prior to my looking at the SHAPE plan (again this years since it just came out). So I am sure it will grow…Our board did meet earlier this month and I am still in the process of meeting with all of our core board so like this list last year, it may change as the year goes on:
I’d like to share a few goals that I would like our state council to achieve during my two year tenure as Director. I have to admit these goals are prior to my looking at the SHAPE plan (again this years since it just came out). So I am sure it will grow…Our board did meet earlier this month and I am still in the process of meeting with all of our core board so like this list last year, it may change as the year goes on:
1. WORKFORCE READINESS (SHRM CLA) 100%
Chapters signing the ESGR Statement of Support (http://www.esgr.org/);
COMPLETED NOVEMBER 2011! Thanks to
MaryJo Martyn and all 20 chapters! Joe
Smedinghoff plans
to continue her work by first polling the chapters to see what initiatives are
already in place and then building a plan for the entire state.
2. Membership (SHRM CLA)
Build SHRM Affiliate Chapters in the Southern part of the state (working on 3
already); we now have 4 in the
works. Research was completed in 2011
and letters to SHRM members in East Metro, Carbondale, and Mt. Vernon have gone
out this week to see if anyone has interest in developing a chapter in those
areas. An additional chapter interest
meeting is planned for early February in Matteson, IL.
3. Government Affairs (SHRM CLA)
Increase awareness of ISC-SHRM & SHRM resources among all state legislators
(with SHRMs help as one of the 10 states they worked with last year); this is truly more like a five year
goal. We did have at least three
chapters invite SHRM to do the Advocacy Program and we are nearing 300
advocates statewide. We still need a
state Advocacy Captain. I’d also like to
see 100% of chapters invite David
Lust to their chapter to
present the program. We had our first
statehouse visit last April and plan our second March 27th.
We added a state legislative affairs director to the board on a
temporary basis to develop our outreach process and to work directly with the
lobbyist firm we hired to watch for HR related bills that we can reach out to
legislators about to increase awareness about SHRM members and their
needs. So far this month they found four
bills (two of which were shell bills) that had an impact on the HR
profession. Reach
100 attendees at our Annual IL State HR Legislative Conference
& Advocacy Day; we did not
achieve this goal in 2011 but it is still a goal for 2012. Watch for registration soon! I hope to increase the state house attendance
by at least 5% over last year’s first every advocacy portion of our legislative
event.
4. Reach
1000 attendees at our annual
conference (in Aug at Drury Lane in Oakbrook); this goal was a bit out there since we really don’t have a chance at
that number until 2014 (after SHRM national is in Chicago in 2013). The reason is our current venue can only hold
972 in the auditorium where all the keynotes present. In 2011 we had 923 totals in the building
(which included attendees, speakers, exhibitors, and media). This year we do plan to sell out early because
John Jorgenson is a
bang up conference director! So plan to
get your tickets in advance.
5. 100%
Chapter participation in the annual Chapter Basket Raffle Fundraiser at State
Conference; we were close in 2011 so
this is still a goal for 2012. We did
increase our council giving by matching what was raised at this event and plan
to continue.
6. Develop
a formal Succession Plan with the assistance of a Nomination Committee to be
appointed; the nomination committee was
appointed so the real work will be done in 2012.
7. Finalize
and implement a formal strategic plan started at last year’s Leadership Core
Planning meeting; still in process.
8. Finalize
and implement an updated Website; completed
in March 2011 – additional improvements are planned for 2012;
9.
Analyze our financial situation
and develop a backup plan to sustain our council and support our mission for a
year or two in case our income is impacted (primarily our attendance at annual
conference). We did appoint a financial committee and added same as an official
standing committee per our bylaws draft yet to be approved by the board. Both committees will complete goals started
in 2011 this year. and
10. We are still looking at
additional ways to improve the overall operations of the council as we have
grown significantly in a short time frame.
Council management professionals are being sought to help improve the
overall operations of the entire.
Finally, again this year, I just want to say thank you to all those I have met and worked with along the way and to those I will continue to work with on the board and in the chapters. I am humbled to serve you the rest of this year and want you to know that my virtual door is always open. Call or text me at 217-414-1297, email me at donna@rogershr.com, DM me on twitter @DonnaRogersHR or Skype me at DonnaRogersSPHR.

WOWIE Judge Provides Advice for next Year’s Entrants
Winners and non-winners of the 2011 WOWIE Awards contest have been notified and a news release announcing the winners will be sent out in August before the ILSHRM annual meeting. For companies that didn’t win, what is the take away message, given they spent hours preparing their application, only to fall short. Fear not employee wellness advocates, because we conducted an interview with one of the WOWIE judges who took the time to provide advice on how to win next year.
![]() |
| Susan Avello |
Susan Avello, Vice-president and partner, Aging Info USA , and one of the WOWIE judges this year, came away impressed with the quality of the entries.
“For the most part, the WOWIE applicants were thinking ahead of the game in regard to their wellness initiatives,” she said. “They tried to help their employees think proactively about well-being and this was the key to their benefit message.”
Avello said that winning entries stood out because they went beyond the norm in their effort to create a healthy workplace and compensated their employees on their effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle outside of work.
“I gave high marks and credit to employers who constantly engaged employees with surveys and continued use of technology such as mobile apps, to not only stay in touch with emloyees but also to allow them to use social media and mobile apps for access to wellness benefits,” Avello said.
Avello gave this advice to companies who want to improve their application for 2012:
“Consider implementing a company culture, a well-being culture and new ways ot using technology for employee engagement and accessibility to this technology to keep employees involved.” She further advised companies to focus on the tie between health and wellness and flex scheduling.
“I realize flexible schedules are not an employee benefit, but I would like to see more about how companies can use flex time for their employees and how they can be creative in their approach to help employees with work/life issue that arise.
