Another ILSHRM12 Takeaway

I did not write a wrap up on this year's conference, I think because I am getting smarter in my old age. With the wisdom and support of our State Council Board we have been able to continue to bring folks to our conference who are brighter and more witty about writing about our show, than I could dream of being.  So I have let them have their way with us.


This is some of the material that has been posted, about the conference.

It seems as thought lately we get fewer but better higher quality posts about these events. There is not the rush to be the very first.

My big take away came from the next to last session on software implementation, which was hosted by the omnipresent William Tincup.  As the session was winding down, William asked if there were any questions. My fellow ILSHRM colleague Joe Smedinghofff, a.k.a. "Big Joe"  asked William this, "What is coming down the pike with software?"   William pondered the question for a moment and he said this.  "Software is becoming predictive."   

Wow! That is something,  I can see this happening right before my eyes. William, as always is dead on with this assessment of where software is going.

Disagree?  Siri (dink) where is the best place to get sushi in the area?    - need I say more.

ILSHRM12 in the Books

It is late, I have been out of town for what seems like two weeks,  my wife is out of town, suffice it to say I am all out of sorts.  But I need to create this post  at the end of my journey home. On Tuesday as the conference wound down I spent some time tweeting to all of the presenters, bloggers and guests that we had in attendance thanking them for their efforts. We greatly appreciate each and everyone of them. If I did not message you, it  was an oversight, we were grateful to have all of  the folks who helped us pull off a two and one half day conference which was nearly flawless.

Thanks to all of the folks who helped us create this, and to those nearly 700 folks who attended,

But now, I would like to publicly thank ALLof the ILSHRM BOARD MEMBERS.  This is  the group of people who made this conference happen and made it a success.   While some folks shoulder more of a load than others,  it was a group effort that made this work so well.   I am proud to be part my local chapter: CICSHRM, SHRM- National as well as a board member of  board of Illinois SHRM.

There is no one who was paid a dime to do any of the work that they did. We are a volunteer organization, and a damn fine one at that.

So from the Social Media guy THANKS TO MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS - a job well done. Be proud of what we have accomplished. - because soon the work will begin for 2013.

Engagement or Enslavement

Yesterday prior to the first pre-conference session I was part of a conversation about Employee Engagement.  It is hard to attend any event about HR these days that does not have at least one session that discusses this subject.  ILSHRM is no different.  The conversation I was part of, involved Paul Hebert and John Sumser.

John was staking out a position that made employee engagement seem almost criminal.  His theory is this.  To take from the fully-engaged employee, what we as the employer are not paying for, is like taking their soul.  We are taking more than we are paying for as the employer and should not be entitled to it. He likened it to slavery.

Hmm.. I am no sure I agree with the theory, but certainly is food for thought. We will see what today brings regarding employee engagement.   More to come...

TChat Live at Illinois SHRM

If you are way into the twitter thing you know what Twitter Chats are, but if you don't live life totally in the social media world you may not have experienced these. There are hundreds of these chats that go on weekly. Some of the chats involve only a few people, some hundreds of folks.   The way a chat works is like this - there is a moderator who may have some support.  The moderator tweets out a question and the followers(audience) respond.  They respond to the question and sometimes each other. They are usually an hour in length.

Some of the more popular chats get the tweet steam buzzing to the point of where they show up as Trending on Twitter.  The stream blisters to where you can't read it or it locks up your computer.  Sound like fun - I think so.  Want to see how it works in real life (IRL).

Come to the lobby of the Drury Lane Theater on Monday evening.  There will be tweeting galore, Meghan Biro the Co-Founder of #TChat (one of the most popular and active chats) will be hosting #tchat from the Lobby/Bar area. I think you should attend and participate!
